You opened a CrossFit gym because you believe that this exercise regime can help people get more physically fit and enjoy a better quality of life, and you aren’t alone. More than four million people are exercising in CrossFit gyms in over 120 countries around the world.
There are more than 5,000 CrossFit gyms and trainers in the United States alone. As a CrossFit gym owner like any other small business owner, you need insurance to protect the investment you have in your gym.
However, as a CrossFit affiliate gym owner, you’re required to purchase insurance and name CrossFit as an additional insured on the policy in order to be a licensed affiliate. When purchasing CrossFit affiliate insurance, you want to know what it covers. Here’s your guide to the coverage you receive:
General Liability Coverage
Accidents and injuries happen in a second, and most of the time, there isn’t a lot you can do to avoid them. However, this won’t stop someone from suing you and holding you liable for damages. Without liability coverage, your CrossFit gym could face a judgment against it for a lot of money.
CrossFit RRG offers general liability coverage to protect you when the worst happens. Here’s what it covers and what each line item means:
Per Occurrence Liability Limit
This is a set amount of money that the insurance company will pay for each incident where you’re accused of liability or where you are judged to be liable. This includes things such as a settlement and legal fees to represent your CrossFit gym in a lawsuit. With CrossFit RRG, this per occurrence liability limit is $1,000,000.
Medical Expenses
When an accident happens, a customer may need medical care. Medical pay is a no-fault medical payment that can be made regardless of liability of fault.
CrossFit RRG pays up to $5,000 in medical bills per person for each incident.
Personal and Advertising Injury Limit
You might not have heard of this type of coverage, but basically, it pays a judgment against you for interfering with someone else’s rights and liberties, or if you’re accused of copyright infringement or slander against a person or another business.
For example, you accuse an employee or a customer of stealing and have them arrested. It turns out it was someone else completely. They can file a lawsuit against you, and this coverage covers that court case.
Damage to Rented Premises for Special Events
Your lease makes you responsible for any damages to the space you rent for your CrossFit gym. Damage can be anything from a hole in the wall or a shattered plate glass window. If you have to pay for these damages out of pocket, it can hurt your gym’s cash flow. However, with this policy, those damages are covered for short term arrangements (less than 7 days). For example, a special event off site.
Annual Aggregate for General Liability
While there’s a maximum per occurrence cap, there’s also a maximum per year. The annual aggregate for general liability is the amount the insurance company will pay each year no matter how many occurrences your CrossFit gym has. CrossFit RRG has a $3,000,000 annual aggregate for general liability.
Hopefully, you’ll never reach this limit in a year, but it might cover three occurrences or five in a year depending on how much the insurance company pays out per instance.
Annual Aggregate for all Coverage Parts
This is similar to the annual aggregate for general liability. Everything, that general liability covers, has its own maximum per occurrence. The annual aggregate for all coverage parts is the amount it will pay for each part in a year when there are multiple occurrences.
Abuse and Molestation Occurrence
You work hard to find the best employees and to treat your staff and customers with respect. However, an inappropriate comment or touching can find your CrossFit gym in the middle of a lawsuit. This coverage helps to protect your gym from this type of liability.
Communicable Disease
While you take measures to sanitize your CrossFit gym, you don’t always know what kind of contagion your members and staff might bring in with them. An outbreak of a communicable disease where your gym is the epicenter can leave you liable for medical expenses and other types of judgments. This coverage specifically protects you from lawsuits.
Professional Liability Coverage
As a professional CrossFit gym owner, there are things that you should know and understand better than the members who come to your gym. When an injury or other incident occurs, your professional knowledge might leave you negligent in the way you handled the situation before the occurrence.
Professional liability coverage helps to protect you from this type of lawsuit. You might also hear it referred to as professional indemnity insurance or as errors and omissions. Basically, this type of coverage protects you from a lawsuit that says you are negligent because as a CrossFit professional, you should have known better than to do something or failed to do something.
With CrossFit RRG, your professional liability coverage protects you and your gym up to $1,000,000 for each occurrence and up to $3,000,000 per year.
